Trekking near Chiang Mai

Here are a few pics from our one-day trek to the tribal villages north of Chiang Mai.

We are hungry too...

From Thailand
Pfft... I'm sick of bananas anyway... Do I look like a monkey to you?

From Thailand
Lovely banana-snorting action going on behind us, raining also onto our backs :)

From Thailand
Ok I take it back... Where's my banana!

From Thailand
B-a-n-a-n-a. I'm pretty sure I never asked for a shoe...

From Thailand
At least the leaves never run out! Yummy!

Come on now, there are more leaves further on, I promise...

From Thailand
The village of the Karen tribe, the largest of ethnic tribes in Thailand... They wear mainly white and their main income is making handicrafts for the tourists.

From Thailand
Lovely little water-fall on the way.

Inspecting the stuff we will float on later...

From Thailand
The villagers believe that if a very large tree grows in the village it is a blessing. They build small houses next to it for the spirits to live in.

From Thailand
Bamboo rafting was fun!! Despite the wet bums! :)

We have also finished our massage course!! :) Free (carefree and thumb-pain free :) ) again! But to our surprise we actually felt a bit sad to leave and already nostalgic. It was a difficult time but our teacher was great and we will remember the class with a lot of fondness.

Just a quick note...

What have we been doing for the past week?

We reached Thailand about a week or so ago (that thing called time and days and hours have sort of lost meaning at this stage of our life of leisure :) ).

Spent one day and night in Bangkok, which was a pleasant surprise. After all the horror-stories we have heard about this busy capital, it might be that we were just extremely lucky to happen to stay in a nice back-backer area of Banglamphu - one of the most peaceful of the kind in any capital we have seen so far, completely hassle-free. The food was absolutely delicious, though of course more on the pricey side and the shopping... Us both being very non-feminine anti-shoppers, in Bangkok we found this activity to be shockingly pleasant! Wonderful quality things at cheap prices and all the things that we needed found instantly- this is the way to do shopping!

After a 12-hour journey on a (non-)sleeper bus we reached Chiang Mai- a pleasant little town on the mountain-side in the northern region. People come here usually for two reasons- for the jungle treks, and for a little bit of authentic culture, pretty difficult to find other-wise in this well-off (compared to the other countries we have seen so far), almost westernized country. We fell (at least right now, plan to do a short trek in a few days) to the second category and signed on a 10-day Thai massage course. Physically one might say that trekking is easier! :) Thai massage is more of a yoga/massage, the masseuse must preferably have strong muscles and a good balance and flexibility. After the second day we were having half-thoughts of quitting. There seemed to be too much back-bending yoga involved and too many things to understand and remember... However now, half-way into the course we are already enjoying it. We feel more balanced, stronger, and way more stretchy :) and suddenly we have found an increasing interest in holistic, healthy natural life-style and food! This in Chiang Mai is really easy to find, every second office is either massage, yoga, health shop or natural food restaurant. In other words, yes- its a bit of a strange time at the moment- we are proper students and have to wake up really early again every morning and do a lot of work on our holiday, but at the same time it is rewarding and has given just as much energy as it has taken. (Though we still feel we need a holiday after the course :) ).

On a not so positive note I was robbed once again on the street by a drive-by motorcycle driver who ripped my bag from across my neck... :( It was a lucky mugging in the sense that I had almost no important items in my bag and once again I am physically unharmed. It is an annoyance and a shock, like last time. But if for any reason somebody needs to call me then please use e-mail, as at the moment I have no more phone.

Greetings to everyone and big hugs!

Musical interval :)

And for something completely different... During our time in Cambodia we learned to love Cambodian music. We heard all the people singing these songs on the streets and we went to little karaoke booths to hear them sing them even louder. :)
Here are three of our personal favourites...

Angkor continued...

We spent the last two days discovering more of Angkor. Three days was just enough in the end, after a while the temples start to look quite the same and its better to remember the initial awe and wonder.

We started day two of Angkor taking a tuk-tuk up to Kbai Spean where there is a small water fall and some lovely pre-angkorian river carvings dedicated to Lord Shiva. An added bonus- about half an hour trek up the hill through the jungle. The scenery was beautiful, the air was surprisingly quiet and we also managed to spot a snake on our way back (less of a shudder every time - yey! :)

We went onwards to Bantrey Srei (the citadel of a Lady). The stone used for this temple was red sandstone so it looked quite different from the other temples and the carvings were stunning and very intricate.

For the last day we rented bikes again and went to the temple of Preah Khan.
It was the centre of a substantial organisation, with almost 100,000 officials and servants. The temple is flat in design, with a basic plan of successive rectangular galleries around a Buddhist sanctuary complicated by Hindu satellite temples and numerous later additions. Like the nearby Ta Prohm, Preah Khan has been left largely unrestored, with numerous trees and other vegetation growing among the ruins. [Wiki]

And last but not least we saw the Terrace of the Elephants...

and the Terrace of the Leper King, both with wonderful carvings yet again.

We are leaving Cambodia tomorrow! It seems really unbelievable. We thought initially to quickly pass through this country and to only visit the highlights and we ended up staying a month. Another piece of our hearts left behind... Yet the heart doesn't get smaller at all, rather our home gets larger :) .

Okon cheran Cambodia! We will come back here muoi dong diet!

The temples of Angkor

As seen from the title we have finally reached Siem Reap and the world-famous temples of Angkor.

Siem Reap is a small and pleasant town, the temperatures seem a tad cooler in the evenings than we are used to from Phnom Penh and our hotel boasts with luxuries like hot water and tv that we haven't had (or missed) for ages.

As for Angkor... Has anybody really got the right words to describe the spendour of these buildings... I think we will let the pictures speak for themselves this time.

This time we rented bicycles for our sight-seeing. It was very hot but we loved the exercise and plan to keep it up for the remainder of our time here.
